Inevitable Trek Post

I'd do a review and stuff except that James Lileks has said it all better than I ever could. Except that I thought Simon Pegg was awesomesauce, but I likes me some Simon Pegg, so...

5. The fine Starfleet tradition of staffing their biggest, most modern ships with people who just graduated from school yesterday - or this morning, or not at all - appears to have started early on.

6. The script writers had the phrase “Kirk is choked” on a macro key.

...

Then the voice over; then the theme, and it’s like they emptied an entire can of Reddi-Whip on the entire cake. You’re ten again, and you can’t possibly be happier.

Except I’m not ten; I’m a middle-aged man, for heaven’s sake. But when I was a child I saw the first episode of Star Trek ever broadcast, at my Grandfather’s farm house, in living color, and I’ve loved it ever since. It would be pathetic to say this meant something to me, but I’m sorry: It would be a lie to say it didn’t.

Thoughts as I watch the inaugural ceremony

[23:34] samantha bong: the irony is that, not only am i more interested in your country's politics than in my own country's, but i'm also more interested in your country's politics than you are.
[23:35] maelfactor: What are politics? Plastic bugs?
[23:35] samantha bong: :P

*******************************

I have to say I *love* the party atmosphere. Watching the coverage pre-ceremony and the ceremony itself feels kind of like watching The West Wing, almost. Partly because TWW did such a good job of approximating the clothes, uniforms, fashion of those in political arenas, but also because this feels very idealistic and celebratory, in the same way TWW was, fictionally. Also, Yo-yo Ma.

*******************************

There's something oddly satisfying about seeing Cheney having to be wheeled around all day, so very undignified in the public eye. I wouldn't gloat if it were something actually serious, but apparently he just strained a muscle while moving boxes. I probably also wouldn't gloat if he were less odious.

*******************************

Why is it that Obama looks almost like he's being walked to the gallows as he walks down the corridor to the ceremony?

*******************************

[00:48] samantha bong: i like that they put black and asian people behind him.
[00:49] samantha bong: the *only* black and asian people on that platform.
[00:49] thecomicaztec: heh. we're inclusive now, don't you know.
[00:51] samantha bong: um, wow.
[00:51] samantha bong: having a pastor at a political ceremony would be a TOTAL no-no in singapore.
[00:51] samantha bong: as in, having him speak as a major part of the ceremony.
[00:52] thecomicaztec: when i said "inclusive" i didn't mean religions :D

*******************************

Aretha Franklin, all things considered, was a good and really classy choice. Also, why do all my "chills down the spine" moments always happen in relation to music?

*******************************

I LOVE how Yo-yo Ma looks like he's having an absolute BLAST performing up there. What I wouldn't give to feel that way about my livelihood.

*******************************

Final thought: it's interesting that a candidate who ran on hope and idealism has centered his inaugural speech around pragmatism and responsibility. I have great hopes for Obama's presidency, but have to admit to some trepidation.

I don't think there's a single part of the default UI that remains >.>

Also, as you can see from this screenshot, we cleared 10-man Naxx just before Christmas :)

Click to see a larger image:

Friday Night Dinner: Ochazuke and Simmered Kabocha

Kabocha simmered in dashi with some mirin and soy. Quick, tasty, healthy.

Also, it's funny that cooking dinner and taking a photo of it is a sign of mental health, for me.

April 2008 FTW

April 2008 is shaping up to be a doozy.

- *Getting married.* Holy fucking hell. Predictably enough, I'm a
little freaked out about getting married.
- *Where will we be living?* Who knows?? I don't know which continent,
country, city, borough, or apartment we'll be in.
- *New awesome music. *Both Gnarls Barkley and Portishead (!!!!) have
new albums coming out in April. Confidential to Portishead: it's about
freaking time! You took a vacation for how long? Next thing you know,
Melanie Rawn will actually finish what she started.

That's it for now, but we'll see what continues to develop.

Happy New Year!

First, a look at my resolutions from Jan 2007. Let's tally that score, shall we? (10 points per resolution).

Get healthier. Sadly, did not get very far with this at all. Score: 0 out of 10.

Learn to drive. Woot, done! And on top of that, got my motorcycle license, too! Score: 20 out of 10. Bonus points for motorcycle license.

Track the books I read. Unfortunately, not done very well. I tracked thoroughly through March, then trickled until nothing after June 7. Score: 4.

Manage my finances more effectively. Well, my 401(k) continues to build, and I've started buying mutual funds, but I still spend too much and don't know where it's all going! Score: 4.

Project Phoenix with Nina. Perished almost immediately. Score: 0.

Keep in touch with family and friends. Well... It's easier to keep in touch with the kids in Singapore now that I'm in Hong Kong, but I'm doing a piss poor job at keeping in touch with NY! Score: 4.

Establish networking contacts in US and Singapore. This has been a banner year for career-related stuff, what with moving to Hong Kong, meeting work people from all over the world, establishing a solid reputation for myself both in Asia and in the US. I'd say I'm doing pretty well on this front, albeit not in the way I envisioned last year. Score: 10.

Maintain a food blog at InfraredHerring.com. I did ok at this for a couple months, then it kinda trailed off. Score: 2.

Maintain a semi-active LJ. Looking over my entries from this year - uh. Not so good. Score: 2.

Not let work take over my life. Mixed results on this front, I think. I avoided pulling crazy hours most of the year, only to encounter a really intense project in these last 4 or 5 weeks. I've still managed to have a life, though! Score: 9.

Take two classes. I took a drawing class, but not a Spanish one. Score: 5.

Apply for other jobs. Nope. Nada. Score: 0.

Organize the apartment. While we were forced by the hand of fate to pack most of our apartment into storage and clear out our stuff, it really wasn't because we wanted to. Score: 5.

Which brings me to a grand total of 65 out of a potential 130 points. Half ain't bad!!

2007 in review

February: NY Comic Con 2007

March: Nearly died climbing Bear Mountain.

April: Got engaged (!!)

May: Hiked Bushkill Falls

July: Got an iPhone for free!

July: Got my driver's license.

(Still!) July: Attended San Diego Comic Con for the first time. Rawk!

August: Got my motorcycle license.

September: Was tapped by work to move to Hong Kong for 6 months - free airfare, moving expenses, free rental in HK, and a living allowance. Woot!

November: Ali and Scott - OTP!

November: Won a $2mil project for work.

Also, I did a lot of traveling this year! Boston in April, Memphis in May, San Diego in July, Singapore in September, Hong Kong in October, New York in November, Seoul in November, New York again in December, Singapore for Christmas. And, you can see my year in food.

Hello my lovelies! I've discovered the joys of posting to LJ through email.

Adan and I will be headed back to NY soon, with a nice little three day stopover in London on the company dime! Does anyone want anything from Hong Kong or London? I'm taking requests :)

Also, y'all had better make time to hang out with us while we're in New York! We'll be in town from Nov 3rd through Ali and Scott's wedding.

Never cook risotto with a cab sauv, even if it's the only wine you have on hand. Especially corn risotto - it looked like moldy grape jam. Tasted fine, but really unappetizing!!

NY -> SG -> HK

So! And we come to this.

I don't have a lot of time to write everything down, and I figure you don't have a lot of time to read everything anyway, so that works out well. Let's just give you the Cliff's Notes, roughly chronological.

Packing up our New York apartment for storage and shipping was a bitch. That week and a half is pretty much a blur in my mind. We have way too much crap.

Even though we've been gone from New York about a month, we've only been in Hong Kong for two weeks. We spent two weeks in Singapore waiting for my HK work visa to come through, then moved to Hong Kong.

Singapore was a lot of fun, as usual. Living on the company dime? Totally awesome. I highly recommend it.

On the flip side, living in three hotels in three weeks really sucked.

Fortunately, we managed to get an apartment within a week of arriving in Hong Kong. It's tiny, but really well located. In Central, on Hong Kong Island. Which is a little like living near Union Square in Manhattan.

I have no oven :( Apparently nobody bakes in Hong Kong.

The first time we came to Central, Adan asked if it was short for White person central, because there are SO MANY expats in this area.

I'm really sick of retail staff and salespeople giving me dirty looks when I say I don't speak Cantonese. It's like they think I'm lying - "You're Chinese and you claim you can't speak Cantonese? What a poser!"

My mom's really excited that I'm just a few hours away by plane, and within the same time zone, of course. Also, I have to screw my courage to the sticking-place and talk to her about the Singapore wedding already. Pretty much everything she's mentioned about her plans for it makes me miserably unhappy. I managed to convince myself for a bit that I could just not care about it, leave it all in her hands and just show up since she's paying for it anyway. But the more I think about it, the more miserable I get, so I guess we need to talk about it soon, before it's too late.

Unlike my office building in New York, there isn't a Starbucks in the Hong Kong office building. They're building one, though, and it's supposed to be done this week! It's like they knew I was coming.

Amusing HK thing - men dressed in business suits, carrying briefcases, sporting gravity-defying anime hair.

People are rude in HK. And this coming from someone who spent 9 years in New York City.

People are also incredibly efficient. We had dinner the other day and brought our check to the front cashier counter to pay, where the one cashier on duty was processing checks, money, and change for three people simultaneously. Not one after another - all at the same time. In two different languages. It was quite impressive.

HK steps are really steep and really bitty. When walking down stairs, there's a constant struggle of "Will there be enough space on the next step for my large foot, or will this be the time I end up sliding down a steep flight of stairs on my ass?"

There's some really awesome food in Hong Kong, but possibly not for the typical American palate. You've got to like Chinese flavors, and/or be adventurous, to really get the most out of a Hong Kong food experience.

The only thing about Hong Kong that's more expensive than New York is housing. Everything else is equivalent or cheaper. So since work is paying for our apartment, we're doing well!

Public transportation is dirt cheap. My daily commute costs me $0.70 round-trip if I take the subway, and $2 each way by cab. And the water ferry to Kowloon costs about $0.30 each way.

I miss you all. And everyone is still welcome to visit! We have a large sofa that's easily sleepable in the living room, so there's that :)

Work's been trying to convince me to stay for longer than six months - although we'd definitely need to at least take April off to come back to New York and get married and all.

Speaking of which, we'll be back in New York in November. We're stopping over in London for three days on our way from HK to NY, then we'll be in NYC from November 3 to November 11. Looking for a place to stay, so let us know if you can put up with us on your floor for two or three days :)

Giving away stuff begins! We most notably are giving away:

Two computer towers. One is 7 years old, one is 6 years old, so you can guess they're not top of the line or anything. One of them has a CD burner, the other just a CD drive.

Two printers. One's a Canon bubblejet, one's a Lexmark.

One really old computer monitor, color, 15".

A tall CD shelf, Ikea Billy. Tall and narrow, fits about 150 CDs.

You're all also welcome to come to our last Thursday gathering this week, where we will be giving away miscellaneous household goods, crafty supplies, toys, blank CDs and DVDs, lots of food, and other stuff.

Anything not claimed will most probably be going out onto the street on Friday, as we have not the time to make alternative arrangements.

Giveaways Galore!

So! As you may have heard, Adan and I are moving to Hong Kong for six months. We're trying to figure out what we're doing with all our stuff, since we're subletting our apartment to a friend while we're gone. Having researched packing, moving, and storage costs, we've come to realize that it would be more cost effective to sell or give away our big items, and replace them when we return, than it would be to have them moved into storage. (Hooray for Ikea furniture - so cheap, it's almost disposable).

We're going to try to sell a number of items on craigslist, but, as is my wont, I'm posting them here first, in case any of youse folks want them.

One 13-inch tv ($10)

One 13-inch tv/vcr combo ($10)

One full-sized bed frame ($60 - we can throw in the mattress for free if you want, but I'm not going to lie to you - it's pretty beat up.)

Seven Ikea Billy bookcases, dark grey or black.
SDCC In Summary

So I think I can say that SDCC was a success!

1. Driving in SD!
We rented a car in San Diego, which marks the first time I've driven without a trained instructor riding shotgun. This was a little nerve-wracking at first, and probably more so for Noah and Ed, who hadn't been informed of my inexperience prior to agreeing to ride with me. Noah should have known, but probably did not realize.

No accidents, no damage to people or property (tiny, tiny scratch on the bumper, but the rental company didn't even notice it). I did almost run over the valets at the hotel more than once - once was my fault because I couldn't figure out which lane they wanted me in, once was theirs, when this one valet backed up (as in, walked backwards) without looking into my lane, about a foot from my front bumper. Idiots.

With the car, we went to In-n-Out, La Jolla beach, a tiny taco dive near La Jolla beach, Jack-in-the-box, and a couple of malls. It was fun! San Diego is definitely a driving town, there really isn't all that much in the downtown area. I'm looking forward to driving again. Also, I'm taking my Basic Rider's Course for my motorcycle license in two weeks. Whee!

2. Panels, panels, panels
Anything TV-related was well-nigh impossible to get into. I barely got into the Lost panel, despite it being on the first day, and me being there an hour ahead of time. Only tricks and wiles got me into the Battlestar Galactica panel, although said tricks and wiles also enabled me to get tons of lovely photos of the cast members present.

The DC and Marvel panels were a ton of fun, despite not knowing all that much about superhero comics. I have to say that while Joe Quesada has more natural and effortless charm/charisma, Dan Didio works very hard at making his panels informative, interesting, and fun.

There's less wankery at the SDCC panels than at the panels I've attended at NYCC or Luna Con. SDCC seems very professional-focused, with (mostly) intelligent questions asked by fans.

Panels I attended:
- Lost: it was fun listening to the two creators bicker and entertain, some interesting questions were asked (Michael's coming back as series regular, no, the mindfuck will not end, Penny might end up on the island at some point, they showed some sort of weird trailer)
- Vertigo: Wow, Vertigo has a lot of minority creators.
- Cup o' Joe (Marvel): Panel of white guys.
- DC Nation: Another panel of white guys. Oh, and Jann Jones (a two-fer, being both a girl and Asian)
- Penny Arcade: Funny, funny guys. Their fans are a little scary, but mostly harmless.
- Battlestar Galactica: Totally awesome. I got in by pretending to be press (hooray for having a Pro badge and a fancy-ass digital camera) and was 3 feet away from Starbuck. I have the photos to prove it!
- Fables: Awesome. I love how almost half the room was women, and it was definitely not just girlfriends along for the ride.

Panels I caught parts of:
- The Boondocks: these guys are every bit as funny in person as their writing for the show would indicate.
- My Dad Makes Comics : with Sky and Winter McCloud, and Matt Wagner's kids. The younger McCloud is at that unfortunate me-me-me-ME-ME age, but the elder McCloud really seems very put together for a 13- or 14-year-old.

3. The Eisners
Low points:

Whitney Matheson and Paul Pope's technical snafu during their presentation. They presented out of order, then proceeded to FAIL SPECTACULARLY at stalling for time, insulting the audience, Bill Morrison (the MC), and pretty much everyone else, while not really intending to do so. They came across as dumb as bricks, not sure if they actually are.

The twenty-minute PowerPoint presentation OF DEATH. A 20-minute long recitation (with accompanying slides and photos) of everyone of interest in the comics industry who had died in the last year. There was a sprinkling of he/she was 90 and died of natural causes, but mostly it was a litany of how not to live your life. Mr. XX died of complications related to diabetes at age 42. Ms. YY died of a heart attack at age 36. Etc, etc. The moral seemed to be "Live nerd, die young, leave a pale, bloated corpse." Inspiring in all the wrong ways.

High points!

Eric Powell and Dwight Albatross with a hysterically funny presentation on how to spice up the Eisners, which included chest hair shaped as an E, WWE-style championship belts instead of trophies, and general hilarity.

Ben Garant and Tom Lennon (creators of Reno 911, which I absolutely hate) were also very funny, with self-referential jokes about Hollywood douchebags, and thanking the MC for the "sweet post-obituary spot" when they had to go on stage after the 20 minutes of obituaries.

Neil Gaiman and Jonathan Ross. Ross is a BBC talk show presenter, and a friend of Gaiman's, and I'm pretty sure Gaiman talked him into doing the gig. He gave Gaiman much cause to regret that when he made jokes at Neil Gaiman's expense, then proceeded to strong-arm him into an on-stage kiss (Alison Bechdel and Ellen Forney had earlier smooched on stage in an homage to the Madonna/Britney smooch, to celebrate the largest ever number of female nominees). I laughed so hard I nearly pissed myself, especially when Neil Gaiman turned painfully bright red after.

See also: CBR's synopsis of the Eisner Awards ceremony.

4. The Showfloor
Some called it the dealers' room - this is in no way an appropriate term for the sheer magnitude of the showfloor. We stood at one end of the room and could not see the other end. Preview Night was 3 hours long, and at the end of it we'd only seen about a third of the showfloor, and were totally and completely overwhelmed, overstimulated, burned out for the night. Preview night was pretty insane. In fact, the showfloor was crammed to the gills for pretty much the entire Con.

Schwag purchased: pretty girly wall decals, dice, dice, more dice, dice earrings.

5. The Trip Home, and Looking Forward!
SDCC has NYCC's ass beat. No question, no doubt. There's just more of a community feel to SDCC. Adan says SDCC was started by fans, and maybe that accounts for the difference. Part of it is that at SDCC, the convention center is surrounded by hotels and venues for after-parties, which means all the action is concentrated in a small geographic area. Everyone goes for Con stuff during the day, AND you can meet up for breakfasts or dinners or after-parties, etc. It surrounds you 24/7, kind of like summer camp.

On the other hand, NYCC was started by the big companies and Jacob Javits doesn't have hotels or much of anything nearby, so once the day's programming is over, everyone splits up all over the place. There are after-parties, but they're scattered all over Manhattan. It's harder to build a community around it. What it boils down to is that SDCC feels like a Con where fans and professionals go to hang out with each other, and oh, by the way, here's some stuff for sale. And NYCC feels like a Con where they've convinced you to pay in order to buy stuff, and it's almost incidental that there are other fans and some professionals there.

And we definitely want to be back! Adan and I were already making plans to return, and we'd said jokingly that if we were asked to volunteer our seat for a free ticket, we should do it, since we've taken Monday as a vacation day anyway. True enough, during our stopover in Chicago, they asked for volunteers, we took the offer, and now we have our tickets for next year's SDCC! Whee! We're totally headed back there.

In short, we had SO MUCH FUN, we're TOTALLY GOING BACK, and EVERYONE SHOULD GO WITH US.

And lastly, my photos from SDCC '07. A word of warning - BSG heavy. But no spoilers.

Many, many quick updates

1. I passed my driving test, Yay!! Now Sam is unleashed on the NYC driving world. On August 12th, I will be taking the Motorcycle basic rider's course, which will give me a motorcycle license. And then in September, I will be getting a cherry red Vespa LX 150. Whee!!!

2. My mom's in town for the weekend, and it's her birthday tomorrow! We spent all Friday night talking and catching up, all day Saturday shopping at Queens Center Mall and in Herald Square (squee, H&M, Victoria's Secret, Gap, Old Navy, and Macy's). Tomorrow we will be headed to the big Bastille Day street fair on 60th Street, and then to Rosa Mexicano for a birthday dinner.

3. For once (ONCE!) I find myself in agreement with what's currently fashion-trendy. Lots of lovely brightly colored floral prints, kimono-style tops and dresses, and exciting black and white prints! Really lovely.

4. After shopping for clothes for an entire day, I feel newly inspired to lose weight. Although who knows how long this will last? Part of the problem is that I honestly do love the way I look, happy and curvy and bouncy. And since Adan finds me lovely, the only downsides are a) health, and b) buying fashionable clothing. One of these should be more important to me than the other, and yet...

5. That is all. Good night!
